MVK: Enid Lake Waterfowl Habitat Improvements with Ducks Unlimited

Story: On April 3, 1989 the Yalobusha County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited signed an agreement with the Corps of Engineers at Enid Lake to perform wildlife management practices at the Springdale Wildlife Management Area. A five phase volunteer program was approved that would provide a waterfowl resting area and a refuge for other wildlife. In the first phase volunteers located and painted boundary lines, closed access roads, installed signs, and evaluated areas to be drained and planted. The second phase included the volunteers draining and planting these areas along with the installation of wood duck nesting boxes, and the planting of trees. The Springdale Wildlife Management Area was evaluated by the Lafayette County Soil Conservation Service, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, and members of the Yalobusha County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. Upon completion of this evaluation, volunteers assisted in the construction of water control structures, annual plantings of waterfowl food, and the annual manipulation of the water levels. Phase four included the installation of nature trails, and the construction of footbridges and an observation deck, which is frequently utilized by school groups for environmental education. The final phase includes the ongoing process of maintaining the area as a premier waterfowl refuge. Volunteers are involved in planting food plots, manipulating water levels, maintaining duck boxes, and making general improvements.
