Story:
The Kyen C restroom is one of the most heavily used restrooms here at Lake Mendocino. Besides needing paint, many of the doors on the toilets and showers had been damadged and two were missing on the mens side. After getting estmates from suppliers of close to $7000, I was told we didn't have that much money to spend on doors. I came up with an idea for replacement doors, using 1X6" T&G pine, smooth on one side. The wood came in 16 foot lengths. To construct the doors, the first thing I did after purchasing the materials, was to clamp together six or seven lengths of the 1X6's, depending on the door widths. I used a circular saw to make 3 cuts on each 16' section, each 52" long. I kept each cut section together as a unit, for each individual door. I then assembled each door, to the correct dimension, using a table saw to cut one of the 1X6's, to adjust the width of the door. I applied a thin coat of wood glue to the tongue of each stick, then clamped the door together, until it was dry. I used the left over material from cutting the doors, to place perpendicular braces along the top and bottom of the door, using wood screws to secure the braces. Each door took about 30 minutes to assemble. Angle iron was attached to the cinder block walls with studs drilled into the walls. The doors were hung off the angle iron on hinges. I then applied a coat of varithane to the doors, after a lttle prepping with sand paper around the edges. The total costs of materials for the nine doors was under $450. I had a hard working volunteer assist me with hanging the doors, making it much easier.
