Story:
The California Department of Fish and Game, Kings River Water Association (KRWA), and the Kings River Conservation District (KRCD) have jointly implemented fisheries habitat enhancement projects in response to a framework agreement known as the Kings River Fisheries Management Program. The program was designed to protect and enhance fishery habitat within the lower Kings River and Pine Flat Reservoir. Some of the ongoing reservoir projects include the following; fish stocking (kokanee salmon, catchable size rainbow trout, and Florida strain bluegill), planting grass, bushes, trees, and the placement of artificial fishery habitat (gabions, catfish condos, and Christmas tree cables) within the reservoir fluctuation zone.
The fishery habitat enhancement program is monitored to provide technical and scientific data for a report which will be used to maximize biological benefits and reduce costs for future habitat enhancement projects. Park Rangers coordinate with California Department of Fish and Game biologists to determine where these projects will be conducted and utilize the park's volunteer programs to provide a source of labor. The success of a habitat enhancement program requires active public involvement, including education and outreach. Bass Clubs, school groups, and boy scouts are an excellent outreach source and are almost always willing to provide assistance because of their shared interest in a healthy, self-sustaining water resource. In addition, this program is supported by grants from state, federal, and private sources.
