California Department of Boating and Waterways Grants

Lake: Pine Flat Lake

Park: Deer Creek

Corps POC: Frank R. Fonseca/Jill Russi

Partnership Type: Volunteer Agreement

Partners:
1. California Department of Boating and Waterways

Story:
Each year the California Department of Boating and Waterways (DBW) provides grants to public entities throughout the state for construction of launch ramps, boarding floats, shore side or floating restrooms, shore protection, vehicle/trailer parking, and other boating related items. In return for this funding, grant recipients are responsible for operating and maintaining the project for a minimum of 20 years at no additional cost to the state. This type of assistance often allows projects to add or repair facilities that normally they would not be able to fund. Pine Flat Lake is one project that took advantage of this. Historically, Pine Flat Lake has had one boat ramp that was very popular and always busy on the weekends. Due to a lack of parking, park visitors would park their vehicles on a cobblestone hillside. Unfortunately, once they drove down the extremely rough cobblestone to park, they could not get back up. Their tires would spin and often times someone would have to pull them out. In addition, there were no designated parking stalls so many individuals would get blocked in. All viable solutions to this problem were too expensive for the park's budget. Fortunately, California Department of Boating and Waterways was able to assist. USACE employees oversaw and were actively involved with everything from the initial grant application submittal through the completion of the asphalt parking lot. California Department of Boating and Waterways provided technical assistance and the additional funding needed to complete the project. Note: Many of the projects within Sacramento District have implemented similar programs.
