Volunteer Camp Hosts

Lake: Pine Flat Lake

Park: Island Park Campground

Corps POC: R. Mike LaFrentz

Partnership Type: Individual volunteer work projects

Estimated Cost Savings: $10,000    Annual

Story:
Every year, more and more individuals are retiring, buying a motor home, and touring the United States. Many of these retirees like to travel to new places and see what the area has to offer. Unfortunately, even with a short stay in a campground, costs can add up quickly. Much like retired travelers, the Corps of Engineers also looks for ways to cut our costs. With recent budgetary constraints, Pine Flat Lake has not been able to hire many of the temporary positions it has in the past. To offset these losses, the lake has developed a Volunteer Camp Host Program. In this program, individuals can volunteer to assist with park operations such as posting camp site reservations, painting picnic tables, litter cleanup, and providing visitors with information. This program has been very effective. Through the use of these volunteers, Pine Flat has been able to provide the public with comparable or increased campground quality and service. Note: Many of the projects within Sacramento District have implemented similar programs.
