Great Outdoors Month, National Trails Day and Mor
Great Outdoors Month is quickly approaching, linking dozens of special days and events such as National Kids to Parks Day May 19, National Trails Day on June 2, National Fishing and Boating Week June 2-10, and National Get Outdoors Day on Saturday, June 9, and National Marina Day on June 9 as well. National partners will ask the President and all 50 governors to issue Great Outdoors Month proclamations, and urge the nations elected leaders to become actively involved in the months events.

NATIONAL GET OUTDOORS DAY: Introducing special outdoor places to families makes National Get Outdoors Day especially exciting and relevant for 2012. GO Day encourages Americans, especially our youth, to seek out healthy, active outdoor lives and embrace our public lands and waters. GO Day events should offer a mix of booths and "active fun" areas places where participants can use a fishing pole, go geocaching, help pitch a tent and more. It is not too late to become involved as a Get Outdoors Day organizer or a new partner at an existing Get Outdoors Day site. Please encourage your lake projects to visit www.nationalgetoutdoorsday.org to nominate their Get Outdoors site.

Event sites must be nominated by visiting the website and selecting the "Get Involved" tab at the top right of the page.

If you're looking for ideas on how to get started, check out the Promo Materials page on the GO Day website: http://www.nationalgetoutdoorsday.org/getinvolved/promotion/ You can also get great ideas from past events held around the country by visiting the National GO Day Facebook page: www.facebook.com/NGODay

NATIONAL TRAILS DAY: Another event to celebrate getting communities into the outdoors is National Trails Day. America has 200,000 miles of trails (nearly 6,500 miles on Corps land) that allow us access to the natural world for recreation, education, exploration, and much more. Trails provide good physical and mental health by offering with a chance to breathe fresh air, get blood pumping, and escape from stresses. It is not too late to become involved in National Trails Day by hosting an event at your project. Please encourage your lake projects to visit http://www.americanhiking.org/NTDRegisterYourEvent.aspx to nominate their Trails Day events. Event sites must be nominated by visiting the website and selecting the "National Trails Day > Register an Event" at the list on the left of the page.

NATIONAL KIDS TO PARKS DAY: Kids to Parks Day commits to the simple motto: "active kids are healthy kids" and encourages residents to use the day as the first of many days spent outdoors, at local parks and recreation sites, to develop more active, healthy lifestyles. More information about the day as well as suggestions for planning and activities can be found at www.kidstoparks.org. Event sites must be nominated by visiting the website and selecting the "Host an Event" tab at the top of the page.
