National Fish Habitat Partnership
Headquarters POC
The National Fish Habitat Partnership got its start in 2001 when an ad hoc group set out to develop a partnership effort for fish that emulated the North American Waterfowl Management Plan. With support from the Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council, the group developed its charter: to protect, restore, and enhance the nation's fish and aquatic communities. This ambitious endeavor was to be completed through partnerships that foster fish habitat conservation and improve the quality of life for the American people.
In order to achieve its charter, the Partnership has identified four goals. First and foremost, they aim to protect and maintain intact, healthy aquatic systems. The Partnership works to prevent further degradation of fish habitats that have been adversely affected. The Partnership also aims to reverse declines in the quality and quantity of aquatic habitats. Ultimately, the goal is to improve the overall health of fish and other aquatic organisms. Lastly, the group wishes to increase the quality and quantity of fish habitats that support a broad, natural diversity of fish and other aquatic species.
The Partnership has identified a multi-pronged approach as the best way to meet their goals. They aim to not only nurture existing fish partnerships, but strive to foster new partnerships that can benefit their cause. The Partnership mobilizes and focuses both national and local support to achieve fish habitat conservation goals. Similarly, the Partnership makes sure to set goals at not only the national level, but at the regional level as well. The Partnership provides national leadership and coordination efforts to facilitate the monitoring of fish habitats and knowledge of habitat status on a large scale.
