May 19: Kids to Parks Day/Classroom Contest
The National Park Trust (NPT) is once again partnering with the Corps in support of their new grassroots movement, National Kids to Parks Day (KTP) - a nationwide day of outdoor play. Last year, over 15,000 families in nearly 200 cities and towns explored parks and Corps of Engineers recreation sites in their community in 2011. This year's KTP Day will be held on Saturday May 19, 2012. To learn more about the day visit www.kidstoparks.org
NPT has made it simple for the Corps to participate in this year's event and will create a customized page for events held at Corps sites. Do not feel like you have to create a new special event, but please consider promoting existing activities planned for the week leading up to or on May 19th.
To participate:
1) Visit www.kidstoparks.org/host-an-event and complete the registration form (disregard the top section and skip right down to the registration form)
2) Distribute information on the NPT school contest Kids can win funding for their class to visit Corps parks! See attached entry form. This is a win-win program. Kids submit applications with proposals for which park their class would like to visit, what healthy activity they will do in the park, and what service project they will complete. The Corps gets a group of volunteers, and the school gets funding for bus transportation, healthy snacks, award certificates and KTP stickers for students, and Buddy Bison plush toys to take on their park adventure.
3) Encourage your community to subscribe to the event at www.kidstoparks.org/attend-an-event
4) Stay connected with NPT and email Billy Schrack; william@parktrust.org with any pictures, descriptions, changes or updates to your event For more information please contact NPTs education director Bill Schrack who is ccd on this message.
Hosting a Kids to Parks Day event is an excellent way to support the America's Great Outdoors and Let's Move Outside initiatives. Please feel free to contact me or Billy for more information.
Thanks,
