Operation: Military Kids- Supporting children of Army families
The Corps of Engineers is dedicated to encouraging the use of Corps recreation resources by the military and their families. Increased public awareness of Corps recreation programs, including increased awareness by Department of Defense and Armed Forces Commands, is a high priority.
In addition to a partnership already initiated with the Operation PurpleĀ® Camp program, I'd like to share with you an opportunity to participate this year in Operation: Military Kids (OMK), a collaborative effort between the U.S. Army and America's communities to support children and youth impacted by deployment. Since its inception in 2005, OMK has connected with 88,000 military youth community members across the United States, and is a part of the 4-H/Army Youth Development Project. Information about OMK is available at http://www.operationmilitarykids.org
Through OMK, Military Youth can:
Participate in a range of recreational, social & educational programs Gain leadership, organizational, and technical skills Receive assistance with school issues Attend single day or weekend camps Meet other youth who are also experiencing deployment
I have attached a list of camps that will be held this year with contact information for each camp director, along with the corresponding nearest Corps Project or District Office. The following 11 Corps Projects/Offices are located near a camp:
Allatoona Lake Jacksonville District Savannah District Lake Lanier Cape Cod Canal Lake Cumberland Saylorville Lake Little Rock District Mississippi River Headwaters New Orleans District Black Butte Lake
This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the water safety, environmental education, and other programs you already have in place to support the kids of military families. To get involved, please contact the director of a camp near you.
Thanks for your attention to this valuable program.
