Volunteer Award Recipient
I am happy to share the attached memos, signed by Thomas P. Smith, Chief of Operations,
announcing the selection of the awardees for the 2020 Excellence in Partnership Award and
the National Volunteer Award, co-sponsored by the Corps Foundation. The recipients are
recognized for their outstanding dedication and enthusiasm for service at our projects. These
efforts are even more impressive under the COVID-19 and other challenges we experienced
throughout the year. These awards will be presented to each of the recipients later this year
when conditions warrant.
National Volunteer Award: This year’s USACE national
volunteer of the year award recipient is Mr. James Zueger from the Youghiogheny River Lake in
the Pittsburgh District. James has spent the past two years removing more than 20,000
gallons of trash, 12,000 cubic feet of Styrofoam, and 7,000 cubic feet of woody debris from
the lake using an innovative self-designed trash removal system on his personal kayak. His
efforts have inspired other lake users to do their part to clean the lake. I want to extend my
sincere appreciation for the incredible service that all of our partners and volunteers continue
to provide USACE and this Nation each and every day!
