Historian Office - Engineer History Display
Since 1775 Army Engineers have been an integral part of the Army and have played a vital role
in developing the United States. To help convey that important message historical message, I
recently asked our Office of History to design an Army Engineer History Display for installation
at the Pentagon.
The first part of that display can be found on the Pentagon's first floor, Apex 3/4. The
exhibit, which is on the Pentagon tour route, is designed to showcase the Army's engineer
history to the greater Department of Defense community. The primary exhibit provides an
overview of the history of the Engineer Regiment and how it has evolved to reflect the needs of
the Army and the Nation it served.
The exhibit's thematic panels begin with the engineers' work on the battlefield and, over
the next 245 years, the evolution of the engineer's Military Construction, Civil Works,
Emergency Operations, and Education and Research missions. A second element of the
exhibit, located adjacent to the Office of the Chief of Engineers, will showcase more
contemporary activities of military and civilian engineers.
For a world-class engineering organization like USACE, recording our history, learning from
it, and informing others of our work for the Nation is a foundational task. The Pentagon's
history display is a tremendous tool that Army Engineer organizations can use to do that. The
Army Engineer history exhibit was designed to allow individual sections to be used on their own
or modified to suit local requirements.
The Office of History can provide copies of the display, in digital form, to interested Corps
of Engineers organizations to print locally or display digitally. In addition, the text can be
modified, and new images can be substituted to reflect your local efforts. Contact Mr. Eric
Reinert in the Office of History for more information at Eric.A.Reinert@usace.army.mil or (703)
428-7241.
To see select portions of the Engineer History Display, see the final design at https://www.usace.army.mil/About/History/Exhibits/Pentagon-OCE- Display.
I hope you all get a chance to survey the display, either in person or online, to celebrate
our storied and proud history as the Nation’s engineers!
