Great Outdoors Month
As you may be aware, Great Outdoors Month is quickly approaching. This provides the opportunity to increase visitation to our parks by linking dozens of special days and events such as National Kids to Parks Day on May 17; National Trails Day on June 7; National Fishing and Boating Week June 1-8; National Get Outdoors Day on June 14, and National Marina Day, also on June 14. Visitation is one of the key components driving budgets; these special events provide fun and educational opportunities to the public that can also help you boost your numbers.
NATIONAL KIDS TO PARKS DAY- May 17, 2014:
Kids to Parks Day commits to the simple motto: "active kids are healthy kids" and encourages residents to use the day as the first of many days spent outdoors, at local parks and recreation sites, to develop more active, healthy lifestyles. More information about the day as well as suggestions for planning and activities can be found at www.kidstoparks.org
NATIONAL TRAILS DAY- June 7, 2014:
America has 200,000 miles of trails (nearly 6,500 miles on Corps land) that allow us access to the natural world for recreation, education, exploration, and much more. To become involved in National Trails Day by hosting an event at your project, visit http://www.americanhiking.org/NTDRegisterYourEvent.aspx
NATIONAL GET OUTDOORS (GO) DAY- June 14, 2014:
GO Day encourages Americans, especially our youth, to seek out healthy, active outdoor lives and embrace our public lands and waters. Suggested GO Day events/booths:
places where participants can use a fishing pole go geocaching help pitch a tent build a campfire other outdoor activity demonstrations
If you're looking for ideas on how to get started, check out the Promo Materials page on the GO Day website: http://w ww.nationalgetoutdoorsday.org/getinvolved/promotion/ Hosting a GO Day event is a great way to support the America's Great Outdoors and Let's Move Outside initiatives which encourage kids and families to enjoy, explore, and experience the richness of America's public lands, develop and build a conservation ethic, and get moving towards a healthier lifestyle.
