National Public Lands Day and LMO - Registration and Give-Aways
September 28, 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of National Public Lands Day (NPLD), and we want to make it big! What have you started planning for this special day?
Whatever event you've planned, no matter how big or how small, don't forget to register it online at http://www.publiclandsday.org/register-site. This website also offers tips for planning NPLD events, suggestions for bringing more volunteers to your event, and free promotional materials if you sign up by August 30, 2013.
NPLD is a nation-wide event which encourages the public to volunteer their time to help care for, or simply to get out and enjoy, their public lands. In 2012, 124 USACE lakes celebrated NPLD with 16,000 volunteers! Land managers, like you, brought these volunteers together to clean 1,800 miles of shoreline and maintain 111 miles of trails. In addition, 4,700 trees and shrubs were planted. Those are some impressive numbers, but we want to provide even more stewardship and learning opportunities on public lands this year. Let's continue this tradition of NPLD excellence and bring even greater numbers of volunteers and stewards to our lands and waters.
In addition, all NPLD events can be co-branded as Let's Move Outside (LMO), part of the First Lady's "Let's Move!" initiative to keep children and families active and healthy. More information can be found at http://www.publiclandsday.org/resources/lets-move-initiative/lets- move-outside. As a result of this co-branding, we can send you flying rings (while supplies last) as give-aways to support your event.
Hellen Keller once stated, "Alone we can do so little: together we can do so much." It is this collaboration of volunteers that makes such a great impact on our public lands during these NPLD events and year-round.
From one land manager to another, thank you for taking the time to organize and register your NPLD event. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding NPLD or LMO events, or if you are interested in receiving LMO rings.
