National Water Trails Designation--MS River-Great Rivers Segment Water Trail and Alabama River
approval letter for the designations of the Mississippi River Water Trail-Great River Trail Segment and the Alabama River Scenic Trail as new National Water Trails by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. The National Water Trail system was just recently established under the America's Great Outdoors Initiative to "recognize the environmental and recreational importance of rivers and waterways and help people connect with their rich water-based natural resources."
The Mississippi River Water Trail-Great River Trail Segment is a 121 mile water trail managed by the Corps of Engineers. The Alabama River Scenic River Trail stretches along seven rivers, two creeks, and one bay. The water trail is managed by the Alabama Scenic River Association, in partnership with the Corps of Engineers and many other public agencies and private organizations.
A requisite of designation of a National Water Trail is significant public and private partnerships. Corps of Engineers staff worked with the partners of both of these water trails to nominate them for this System. The enclosed approval memo outlines the partners that have worked with our Corps project staff to provide extensive opportunities for the public to learn about and enjoy the these exceptional waterways.
