Directions: The Illinois Waterway Project starts in Grafton, IL. The nearest metro area is St.
Louis. Direction from Downtown St. Louis take I-70 W to the McKinley Bridge. Continue on IL-
3 (12 miles) to IL-143 (5.5 miles) to IL 100 (15 miles) to Grafton, IL
Factoid: The Illinois Waterway project is last 80 miles of the Illinois River. This project is in a
whole part of the Rivers Project Office. The Rivers Project is responsible for the
operation and maintenance of five dams and seven locks, 300 miles of dikes and revetment
and 110,000 acres of public lands and waters for the authorized purpose of maintaining a
nine-foot navigation channel on the Upper Mississippi River, and the lower 80 miles of the
Illinois River. The Rivers Project recognizes and manages the multi-purpose use of these
lands and waters, which include fish and wildlife management, recreation, flood control,
navigation, and water supply and quality.
NOTICE: Many states are discouraging or banning movement of firewood to control spread of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). Not bringing wood from home to your campsite and not taking unused wood you procure while camping home with you is recommended -- required in some states.
