Helping Make Education Fun in an Outdoor Classroom

Lake: Sardis Lake, MS

Partners: USACE; Lafayette County School District, Oxford, Mississippi

Partnership Type: Cooperating Association

Corps POC: Alton W. Pollan, Park Manager

Story: In 1995, students and their teachers at Lafayette Middle School in Oxford, Mississippi became partners with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to become stream monitors with the Adopt-A-Stream Water Quality Testing Program at Toby Tubby and Hurricane Creeks, tributaries of nearby Sardis Lake. During "Stream Days" as it is called at the school, students are bused during each class period to the creek, where Corps Rangers are standing by to assist the children in collecting macroinvertebrates and testing chemical parameters of the water, all indicative of the quality of water in the stream. Results are sent to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. The result? A hands-on science learning experience in an outdoor classroom where the sky is the limit! Stream Days makes education fun and accomplishes water testing for the Corps. This unique partnership is now in use by numerous schools in the three states that comprise the Vicksburg District of the Corps. The program is the backbone of Sardis Lake’s Interpretive Program, which serves over 24,500 students in the three counties that surround the North Central Mississippi reservoir.
