Story: In May of 2003 the staff at Shenango Lake was tasked with finding a way to complete a growing backlog of maintenance items while operating on a reduced budget. The Navy Seabees came to the rescue, with a talented group of 40 men skilled in carpentry, plumbing, wiring, and other trades. The unit provided over 480 hours of volunteer service as part of their weekend drills, replacing roofs on two restrooms and one pavilion. The total savings to the Corps was over $23,000, with low incidental expenses of only $262. The program was such a success that several work projects have been planned for the fall of 2003, including the installation of new playground equipment and converting an office building into a conference center. The work could not be completed without the help of the Seabees unit.
