SPA: John Martin Reservoir Eagle Nest Partnership

Lake: John Martin Reservoir, CO

Partners: USACE; Southeast Colorado Power Association; Colorado State Parks; Boy Scouts of America

Partnership Type: MOU

Story: Each year, John Martin Reservoir becomes a haven for wintering bald eagles. The majestic birds take refuge from the elements inside the Lake Hasty Recreation Area, and also use the same as a staging area before and after feeding on the reservoir. In April 2003, cottonwood poles were cut and placed in John Martin Reservoir State Park and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property to help replace older and damaged trees. Southeast Colorado Power Association volunteered to dig the holes so planting could take place. SE Colorado Power dug the holes as a part of their mitigation under U.S. Fish and Wildlife mandate for power pole raptor protection. Boy Scouts planted the poles.
