Story: On August 23, 2003 Congressman David Price and officials from Wake County, Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, North Carolina Department of Transportation, North Carolina Horse Council, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers celebrated the grand opening of the first segment of the American Tobacco Trail (ATT) in Wake County. This multi-use trail provides opportunities for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders as well as access for hunters utilizing game lands on Corps property. The ATT extends 23 miles along an inactive railroad line from the former site of the American Tobacco Company in Durham (origin of the trails name) to its terminus in western Wake County. Along the way, the trail passes through portions of Durham, Chatham, and Wake Counties. Five segments of the trail (3 miles total) and two trailhead facilities are located on Federal property under the stewardship of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at B. Everett Jordan Lake. The Corps has signed an MOA with Wake County and the NC Wildlife Resources Commission for operation of the portions of the trail on Federal property. Additional MOAs will be signed for the segments in Durham and Chatham Counties. Each county must also receive a license to utilize the NCDOTs railway corridor easement on Federal property. The entire trail is expected to be open in the next 4 years. Congressman Price has sponsored legislation to provide Federal funding for portions of the trail in all three counties.
