18 June 2015Articles for this issue
PollinatorsDid you know that June 15-21 is National Pollinator Week? Eight years ago, the Pollinator Partnership initiated and the US Senate approved the designation of a week in June as "National Pollinator Week" to highlight the importance of pollinators. Recent losses of honey bees and other pollinators such as birds, bats, and butterflies are an ecological as well as an economical problem that requires Federal agencies to increase efforts for their protection. In June 2014, President Obama issued a memorandum directing federal agencies to take steps to protect and restore pollinator populations. The National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators was issued in May 2015. Through the actions outlined in the Strategy, which includes the US Army Corps of Engineers Pollinator Protection Plan, and by working with partners across our country, we can and will help restore and sustain pollinator health nationwide. New pages have been developed and are now posted under the Environmental Stewardship portion of the NRM Gateway that provide information about the Strategy and the USACE Pollinator Protection Plan.
