Hispanics were the only ethnic group reported to be increasing rapidly on a large percentage (23 percent) of projects. A map of recent Hispanic visitation trends on Corps projects suggests that variations in Hispanic visitation trends were somewhat regionalized. Hispanic visitation was stable in much of the upper Midwest, while increasing throughout much of the rest of the country. Projects experiencing a rapid increase in Hispanic visitation were most numerous in localities reporting some of the largest Hispanic population increases in the 2000 census. These included localities in southern, central, and western states. In a number of these localities, Hispanic visitors had recently taken up residence in surrounding communities, attracted there by new jobs in construction and agriculture, including meat processing and commercial nurseries.
