Partners in Flight

Headquarters POC

Partners in Flight is an initiative that has remained steadfast in its goals since 1990. Partners in Flight (PIF) aspires to maintain healthy bird populations, in natural numbers, in healthy ecosystems through the collaborative efforts of over 150 voluntary partners. These partners, located throughout the Western Hemisphere, are engaged in all aspects of landbird conservation ranging from science, research, planning, and policy development to land management, monitoring, education, and outreach. PIF partners work together to protect landbirds, develop priority species lists, maps, conservation plans, and databases that facilitate international conservation between Mexico, Canada, and the U.S.

PIF has garnered the help of government agencies as well as private industry partners in their quest to reduce the need for regulatory actions for landbird species. PIF contends that it is better to monitor and protect species before the species becomes threatenedor worse, endangered or extinctas this prevents the need for government money to be spent creating and executing legislation meant to mitigate the human impact on a species. PIF furthermore maintains that these preventative measures are more likely to yield positive results; actions taken after a species is imperiled are often risky, long-term endeavors.

PIF also operates under the consensus that birds are good indicators of environmental health. Ergo, any actions that benefit avifauna will also prove beneficial to the human population of that region. Birds are an integral part of any ecosystem and provide many eco-services such as pest control in agricultural fields. This is why PIF makes great efforts to identify still-common, yet steeply declining populations each year and to protect those species. With the work of PIF's partners, the organziation hopes to keep common birds common.
