Chief's Visitor Recreation Safety Guidance
Here is a copy of the Chief of Engineers FY07-08 visitor safety guidance which addresses the Chiefs challenge of reducing public fatalities at our projects by 40% over the next two fiscal years. The memo was issued to all Commanders and safety offices earlier this week by the Chief, Safety Office, but was not forwarded to the Operations community until corrections to the visitation/fatality rate chart could be made. The revised information is provided in the attached copy. Please note that all visitation data is based on OMBIL records and fatality rates are based on all public fatality (not just water-related) reports submitted through the Safety Office chain.
I am pleased that LTG Strock has made special mention of the outstanding efforts already accomplished by our field offices on behalf of public safety. I encourage you to continue the good work and to take advantage of new opportunities to work within the Natural Resources community to share ideas and resources. The National Operations Center (NOC) for Water Safety and the national water safety programs division representatives stand ready to support your efforts and to assist you with your ideas and needs, including graphic designs, educational materials, partnership assistance and program review. Feel free to contact Lynda Nutt, Manager of the NOC for Water Safety for more information. Lynda can be contacted via e-mail Lynda.g.nutt@usace.army.mil or at 208-699-5944.
