FY98-24 USACE Public Recreation Fatalities Data Summary
The FY98-24 summary sheet on page 3 shows that 89% of the public recreation fatalities were male, 89% were not wearing a life jacket, 82% were 18 or older, 47% were swimming in undesignated areas, 20% were from falls from boats, docks, and shore, and 21% alcohol was involved or suspected. The ten year, FY24, FY23, and division summary sheets show similar statistics. Knowing these statistics makes the target audience at USACE lakes and river projects when it comes to water safety adult males not wearing life jackets, so please do whatever you can to promote water safety to adults and increase life jacket wear.
