    2019 USACE NRM Award Winners
It is my pleasure to announce the following winners for the 2019 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Natural Resource Management Awards:

  • Natural Resource Management Employee of the Year - Mr. Derick Walker, Lake Ouachita, Vicksburg District

  • Hiram M. Chittenden Award for Interpretive Excellence - Ms. Amber Tilton, The Dalles Lock and Dam Project, Portland District

The Natural Resource Management Employee of the Year award recognizes an individual who has performed commendable and outstanding work in the fields of recreation, natural resources stewardship and environmental compliance. During the past year, Mr. Walker established a reputation for himself as a well-respected and selfless leader who is dedicated to his team. He has helped to revolutionize his project's approach to park improvements by providing high quality recreational opportunities with the least user impact. His participation on multiple project delivery teams has generated benefits from the lake on up to the national level. Most importantly, he has served as a mentor inspiring others and teaching them that hard work and teamwork provide the greatest and most rewarding results.

The Hiram M. Chittenden Award for Interpretive Excellence recognizes contributions in interpretation and environmental education that produce a positive experience for visitors and enhance public understanding of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During the past year, Ms. Tilton took a creative approach to the difficult subject of mortality with her Se7en Deadly Swims poster which has been incorporated into our National Water Safety Campaign. She has also written an article for the National Association for Interpretation's Legacy Magazine entitled Interpreting Death to Save Lives: A Matter of Life and Vest. Her efforts with the local chamber of commerce and a tour bus company have helped revolutionize public access to The Dalles Lock and Dam Project.

We received many exceptional nominations this year and all are worthy of recognition. I appreciate your staff taking the time to nominate and recognize your best.

Please join me in congratulating our awardees. My point of contact for NRM awards is Mr. Jeffrey Krause who can be reached at 202-761-1228 or jeff.krause@usace.army.mil
