Bats Current Threats Banner

Current Threats

Bats are experiencing numerous threats: foraging and roosting habitat loss, contaminants, and continued human disturbance at winter hibernation sites. Recently, two new threats have emerged:

    1. Bat mortality associated with wind energy turbines. Although variable by bat species and location, death rates of ~10+ bats/ turbine/year are occurring.

    2. An emerging disease known as White-nose Syndrome (WNS) associated with a newly discovered fungal pathogen has resulted in the death over 1 million hibernating bats in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. For more information on WNS click here.

To monitor bat population status, we have started a nationwide monitoring program using ultrasonic detectors. Click here for more information.
